What To Expect From Me
There are so many kinds of therapy today, it can feel overwhelming. How do you know which approach or modality is right for you? Fortunately, research has shown that most people get better regardless of which approach is used.
In general I am a direct and involved therapist. I engage with you in conversation, challenging you when believed to be beneficial to your growth, and I try to always use humor. Some of the greatest comedy evolved from the deepest tragedy. When working with children I meet them at their level both developmentally and physically - often our sessions will be spent sitting and playing on the floor.
I consider myself to be rooted in a psychodynamic or relational approach to therapy. I believe that your healing comes from the therapeutic relationship we share. More specifically I utilize Control Mastery Theory. Don’t let the name throw you off, it’s not as it sounds. CMT is based on the theory that people develop pathogenic beliefs about themselves. That’s a fancy way of saying they develop harmful, negative or maladaptive intrapersonal beliefs. Most of the time these beliefs began in childhood and were solidified over time.
Our work together is focused on disconfirming those beliefs and replacing them with more positive, helpful and often truer beliefs about yourself. CMT also emphasizes the idea that people want to get better, that they often have some kind of unconscious plan to do so and may simply need help organizing themselves. Or they may need the support and encouragement of a therapist to follow through with their plans. The potential to heal, to be the version of yourself you want to be, is already within you. My role is to help you live into that potential.
